How to keep caption writing on your iPhone
Your photos, your call. With On Device Only, your iPhone writes each description itself using Apple Intelligence, and it never falls back to another provider.
On iPhone
- Tap ☰ at the top right, then Photo Intelligence.
- Choose On Device Only. It reads “Write the description on this device.”
- Add a moment as usual. Your iPhone takes a closer look at the photo and writes the description, and you can edit it before you save.
- That’s it. On Device Only never falls back to another provider.
On Android
- Tap More at the top right, then Photo Intelligence.
- Under Photo captions, choose Write my own.
Android has no on-device option. With Write my own, no photo leaves your phone for analysis, and you write each description yourself.
On Device Only needs iOS 27 or later and an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence. If it isn’t available, your photo is not sent anywhere else and you write the description yourself. Your moments still sync to your family’s account whichever you choose.
TipUse Caption style on the same screen to choose how descriptions sound. You can always write or change a description yourself.
