How many hours of homeschooling are required per year?

It varies by state. Most states that set a requirement fall between 150 and 180 days, or 900 to 1,000 instructional hours per year. Some states have no hour or day requirement at all. Use this calculator to look up your specific state’s rule.

What counts as an instructional hour for homeschooling?

An instructional hour is time spent in structured educational activity, reading, math lessons, science experiments, art, music, physical education, and similar subjects. Most states do not require formal documentation of every minute, but keeping a simple log is good practice.

Do I have to track homeschool hours if my state has no requirement?

Not legally, but tracking hours is still useful for building a portfolio, demonstrating educational progress, and preparing transcripts if your child applies to college or dual enrollment programs.

Which states have the strictest homeschool hour requirements?

Pennsylvania requires 180 days with specific subject hour minimums. Ohio, New York, and Georgia also have detailed requirements. States like Texas, Illinois, and Oklahoma have minimal or no state-level hour requirements.
