Homeschool Writing Curriculum
Writing is the subject most parents struggle to teach — here's the curriculum sequence that actually works.
Writing is the homeschool subject with the highest variance in outcomes. Done well, homeschoolers produce exceptional writers. Done poorly, students reach 9th grade unable to organize a paragraph. The good news: a few solid programs (Writing With Ease/Skill, IEW, Brave Writer) work for almost everyone.
The K–4 foundation: copywork, narration, dictation
Charlotte Mason's three pillars work for almost every method. **Copywork** (3–5 lines daily of a great sentence) builds spelling, grammar, and beautiful sentence patterns. **Narration** (telling back what was read) builds composition orally before it's writing. **Dictation** (writing what's read aloud) builds spelling and punctuation. Programs like Writing With Ease (Bauer) build this as a 4-year sequence.
The 5–8 lift: paragraphs to essays
Move from copywork to original writing in 5th–8th. **Writing With Skill** (Bauer, secular) and **Institute for Excellence in Writing** (IEW, Christian-friendly) are the two most popular middle school writing programs. Both build a 5-paragraph essay by 7th–8th grade. Brave Writer's middle school packages are gentler and more open-ended.
9–12 polish: thesis writing, research, rhetoric
High school writing focuses on thesis-driven essays, research papers (5–10 pages with sources), and rhetorical analysis. **The Lost Tools of Writing** (classical rhetoric), **IEW Advanced Communication Series**, and **Excellence in Writing for High School** all work. AP English Language and AP English Literature add formal exam-style writing.
How to grade and respond to writing
Mark only one category at a time (content one round, mechanics the next). Read writing aloud — you and the student both hear awkwardness immediately. Use rubrics from Lee Binz's HomeScholar or similar to assign letter grades for high school work.

Frequently asked questions
IEW vs. Writing With Skill — which is better?
IEW is more structured and works for resistant writers. Writing With Skill (Bauer) is more open-ended and works for self-motivated students. IEW has video; WWS does not.
My child hates writing. What do I do?
Shorten output to 3 sentences. Type instead of write. Use voice-to-text. Read excellent writing daily. Often the issue is mechanical (handwriting fatigue, slow typing) rather than ideas.
How long should a high school research paper be?
9th: 3–5 pages. 10th: 5–7 pages. 11th: 7–10 pages. 12th: 10–15 pages or a senior capstone of 15+. Quality over length.
