Homeschool Tenth Grade

Tenth grade extends the high school plan — geometry or algebra 2, chemistry, world or American literature, and the first PSAT.

Tenth grade typically extends the 9th-grade plan: English 10, geometry or algebra 2, chemistry with lab, world or American history, foreign language 2, plus electives. Most students take the PSAT for the first time in October. Days run 5–6 hours of focused work.

Math: geometry or algebra 2

Pick up where 9th left off. If algebra 1 was 9th, geometry is 10th. If geometry was 9th, algebra 2 is 10th. Choose any solid program; consistency within a sequence matters more than swapping.

Science: chemistry with lab

Chemistry is the typical 10th-grade lab science. Apologia Chemistry, BJU Chemistry, or for secular families Memoria Press's Conceptual Chemistry, OpenStax Chemistry, or co-op chemistry classes. Document 30+ lab hours.

English 10: world or American literature

Continue literature + composition with a focused reading list. Most 10th-grade English covers either world literature (with Shakespeare) or American literature (Hawthorne, Twain, Fitzgerald). Add a research paper (5–7 pages) with formal citations.

PSAT and standardized testing

Most 10th graders take the PSAT in October as practice. SAT/ACT prep can begin in spring. Aim to take the SAT or ACT for the first time in spring of 10th or fall of 11th.

Frequently asked questions

Should my 10th grader take the PSAT?

Yes — most homeschoolers take it in 10th as practice and 11th to qualify for National Merit. Register through a local school or via the College Board's homeschool portal.

How much SAT/ACT prep does a homeschooler need?

Most students benefit from 20–40 hours of focused prep in spring of 10th or summer before 11th, then re-take if needed. Khan Academy's free SAT prep is excellent.

When should we visit colleges?

Spring break of 10th and summer before 11th are common. Aim to have a list of 8–12 schools to research by junior year.
