Homeschool Kindergarten

Kindergarten at home is the start of light formal lessons — about 90 minutes a day, with reading and math leading the way.

Kindergarten is when most homeschool families begin tracking subjects formally. The compulsory attendance age is 5 in around half of U.S. states; in others, it is 6 or 7. Even when not legally required, a gentle kindergarten year builds rhythm and gives parents practice. Plan for about 90 minutes of formal lessons and 4–5 hours of play, outdoor time, and read-alouds.

Reading instruction in kindergarten

Most homeschool kindergartens spend 15–20 minutes a day on phonics-based reading: letter sounds, blending CVC words, sight words. Popular structured programs include All About Reading Pre-Reading and Level 1, Logic of English Foundations, and 100 Easy Lessons. Some children are reading independently by year-end; many are still working on blending. Both are normal.

Math in kindergarten

Counting to 100, simple addition and subtraction within 10, recognizing numbers, basic shapes, and patterns. RightStart Math A, Math-U-See Primer, Singapore Earlybird, and Saxon K all do this well. Hands-on materials (counters, blocks, base-ten rods) work better at this age than worksheets.

The other subjects (and how to keep them light)

Read-aloud history (Story of the World Vol. 1, or the Beatrix Potter / classic picture-book route), nature walks for science, weekly cooking or baking, art projects, music — all done together as a family rather than in formal subject blocks. Total formal lesson time is 60–90 minutes; the rest is play.

What 'success' in kindergarten really means

Not academic mastery — habits. A kindergartener who can sit for a 15-minute lesson without melting down, who loves being read to, and who happily takes himself outside for an hour has succeeded. Reading and math will come whether he reads at the end of K or the end of 1st.

Who this is for

Parents of 5-year-olds beginning the homeschool journey, especially those wanting to build gentle daily rhythm.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to file paperwork for kindergarten homeschool?

It depends on your state. In Texas and California, no notice is required. In New York or Pennsylvania, you must file. See your state law guide.

My kindergartener won't sit for lessons. What do I do?

Shorten lessons to 5 minutes and lengthen across more subjects, or do most learning orally during play. Five-year-olds vary enormously; many are ready for 30-minute lessons by mid-year, others need until first grade.

Should I worry if my kindergartener isn't reading?

No. The 'normal' range for fluent reading runs from 4 to 9. The strongest predictor of long-term reading is being read to daily, not the age of decoding.
