Homeschool Sixth Grade

Sixth grade begins middle school — pre-algebra or algebra-readiness, formal essay writing, and growing student ownership of learning.

Sixth grade is the start of middle school for most curricula. Days run 4–5 hours. Math hits pre-algebra; writing produces full essays; science extends to introductory life or physical science with lab work. Students take more ownership of their daily schedule.

Math: pre-algebra in earnest

Most students take a dedicated pre-algebra course in 6th or 7th: Saxon 8/7, Art of Problem Solving Pre-algebra, Singapore Dimensions Math 6, Math-U-See Pre-algebra. Negative numbers, exponents, basic algebra equations, ratio, percent.

Writing: the full essay

Five-paragraph persuasive and expository essays, basic research papers (3–5 pages with bibliography), continued grammar drill. Writing With Skill 3, IEW SWI-B.

Science: a real lab subject

Most families pick a single science (general, life, or earth) for the year and run weekly experiments with a formal lab notebook. Apologia General Science, BookShark Level G, RSO Earth/Space all popular.

History and electives

Continue chronological history or pick a focused study (American history, world geography). Add foreign language formally if not already. Many add formal logic, art history, or computer programming as electives.

Who this is for

Families with 11–12 year olds entering middle school who want to build essay writing and lab science habits.

Frequently asked questions

Should my 6th grader take pre-algebra or algebra?

Most 6th graders take pre-algebra; advanced students may take algebra 1. Either is fine. Mastery matters more than acceleration.

How do I grade middle school work?

Many families don't until 9th grade. If you do, focus on quality of thinking and revision rather than first-draft performance.

Is 6th grade too early for high-school credit?

Some accelerated students earn high school algebra 1 or foreign language credit in middle school; document carefully if so. Most families wait until 9th.
