Homeschool Seventh Grade

Seventh grade often introduces algebra 1 and a first formal lab science, with writing and reading workloads approaching high school.

Seventh grade is when many homeschool students take algebra 1. Days run 5 hours. Reading load extends to longer novels and primary sources. Writing produces consistent essays. Science is taught with formal lab work. The student's daily independence approaches high school level.

Math: algebra 1 (or finish pre-algebra)

About half of homeschool 7th graders take algebra 1; the other half take pre-algebra and save algebra for 8th. Either is good. Saxon Algebra 1, Art of Problem Solving Introduction to Algebra, Math-U-See Algebra 1.

Writing: refining the essay

Continue 5-paragraph essays, longer research papers (5–7 pages, 5+ sources), introduction to thesis-driven writing. Many add a formal classical rhetoric program (Lost Tools of Writing) or stick with IEW SICC-A/B.

Science: physical or life with lab work

A first formal lab science, often general physical science or life science. Weekly labs with full lab reports. Many families use this year as 'pre-high-school' science to ease into the high-school sequence.

Documentation if working at high school level

If your 7th grader takes algebra 1, this counts as a high school course. Document carefully — keep the syllabus, sample work, and final grade in case you choose to put it on the high school transcript later.
