Homeschool Second Grade
Second grade extends reading and math fluency, with the first real writing and the introduction of multiplication.
Second grade typically runs 2.5–3 hours of formal lessons. Reading shifts from learning to decode toward reading to learn. Math introduces multiplication and longer subtraction. Writing extends from copywork to original sentences and short paragraphs.
Reading: chapter books and comprehension
Most second graders are reading chapter books independently (Magic Tree House, Encyclopedia Brown, Boxcar Children). Continue daily reading aloud at higher levels than the child can read alone — read-aloud vocabulary keeps growing comprehension capacity. Add comprehension questions or oral narration.
Writing and language arts
Daily copywork or dictation builds spelling and grammar in context. Begin short original writing: 2–3 sentences daily, then a paragraph by year-end. Programs like Writing With Ease (Bauer) or Brave Writer's Jot it Down work well. Continue handwriting practice.
Math: multiplication enters
Multiplication facts begin (usually 2s, 5s, 10s in 2nd grade; full table in 3rd). Continue daily addition and subtraction practice with regrouping. Introduce simple fractions as part of a whole. Singapore 2A/2B, RightStart C, Saxon 2 are all excellent options.
History and science get more structured
Many families now formally start a chronological history cycle (Story of the World Vol. 1 or Beautiful Feet Early American). Science can be a single topic per term (insects, weather, the human body) using library books and simple experiments.
Who this is for
Families with 7–8 year olds ready for slightly longer lessons and more independent reading.

Frequently asked questions
Should multiplication be memorized in 2nd grade?
Some facts (2s, 5s, 10s) usually are. Full mastery typically comes by end of 3rd. Don't push memorization until conceptual understanding is solid.
How long should my 2nd grader's writing be?
A few sentences in fall, a short paragraph by spring. Quality of thinking matters more than length.
My 2nd grader hates handwriting. What do I do?
Shorten sessions to 5 minutes daily, try a different program (cursive, Italic), or use a pencil grip. If letter formation remains poor, consider an OT screening.
