Homeschool Ninth Grade
Ninth grade officially starts the high school transcript — every course and grade now counts toward graduation and college admission.
Ninth grade begins the high school transcript. Choose courses carefully, document obsessively, and grade consistently. Most students take English 9 (literature + composition), algebra 1 or geometry, biology with lab, world or U.S. history, foreign language 1, PE, and a fine art elective. Total daily work runs 5–6 hours.
The transcript starts now
Every course taken in 9th–12th grade goes on the high school transcript. Use a simple template: course name, year taken, credits (typically 1.0 per year-long course), grade, GPA. Many homeschool families use Transcript Maker, HSLDA's free template, or a custom Google Sheet.
English 9: literature and composition
Most homeschool 9th-grade English combines a literature reading list (4–6 major works), weekly essays or analytical writing, and continued grammar drill. Programs include Easy Peasy High School, Excellence in Literature 9, or build-your-own from a published reading list.
Math: algebra 1 or geometry
Most students take algebra 1 in 9th if they didn't take it in 8th, or geometry if they did. Both are full-credit courses. Saxon, Art of Problem Solving, Math-U-See, Teaching Textbooks all popular.
Science: biology with lab
Biology is the typical 9th-grade lab science. Document at least 30 lab hours over the year for a full lab science credit. Apologia Exploring Creation with Biology (Christian) or BJU Press Biology (Christian) for traditionalists; Conceptual Biology, Big History, or library-based with a lab kit for secular families.
Foreign language and electives
Most colleges expect 2–3 years of the same foreign language. Spanish, French, Latin, and Mandarin are all widely accepted. Add a fine art (music, art, theater), PE (physical activity log), and one elective the student chooses.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make a high school transcript?
A simple template with course names, year, credits, grades, and GPA is enough. Free templates from HSLDA, Donna Young, or Lee Binz work well.
Do colleges accept homeschool transcripts?
Yes, including all Ivy League and state flagship universities. Most have established homeschool admission policies. SAT/ACT scores typically matter more for homeschoolers than for traditional applicants.
How do I assign grades in 9th grade?
Combine quizzes, tests, papers, and projects. Many parents use a 90-100 A, 80-89 B, etc. scale. Be consistent across years.
