Homeschool Fourth Grade
Fourth grade extends writing into multi-paragraph essays and introduces fractions, decimals, and the early sciences.
Fourth grade is the start of upper elementary. Days run 3.5–4 hours of formal work. Writing becomes the focus subject — students should produce a multi-paragraph essay or report by year-end. Math expands fractions and decimals. Science begins to be taught as a separate subject for many families.
Writing: from paragraph to essay
Three to five paragraph essays, simple research reports (one source), and the start of formal grammar instruction. Programs like Writing With Skill 1, IEW Student Writing Intensive A, or Bravewriter The Arrow continue to work well. Daily journaling or copywork persists.
Math: fractions, decimals, and long division
Full mastery of long multiplication and long division. Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators. Introduce decimals and percent. Geometry and measurement get more emphasis. Singapore 4, RightStart F, Math-U-See Delta/Epsilon.
Science as a distinct subject
Most curricula now treat science as its own subject, often rotating earth, life, and physical science across the upper-elementary years. Apologia, BookShark, RSO, or eclectic library-based study all work; weekly experiments and a basic lab notebook begin to matter.
History and reading
Continue chronological history if classical, or unit-based for unit study families. Independent reading should now include some non-fiction. Most students read 25–30 books per year independently in 4th grade.
Who this is for
Families with 9–10 year olds ready to extend writing, deepen math, and start treating science as a distinct subject.

Frequently asked questions
How much writing should my 4th grader produce?
A short essay or one-page report monthly. Daily output is usually a sentence or short paragraph plus copywork.
My 4th grader struggles with fractions. Normal?
Yes — fractions are the single hardest topic in elementary math for most kids. Use manipulatives (fraction bars), don't rush to algorithms, and expect 6+ months of work.
Should we start foreign language in 4th grade?
It is a popular age. Latin is classical canonical; Spanish, French, and Mandarin all work. Aim for 3–4 short sessions weekly rather than long blocks.
