Homeschool Eleventh Grade

Eleventh grade is the most academically intense — algebra 2 or pre-calc, physics, AP courses if relevant, and the first SAT/ACT.

Eleventh grade is widely the academic peak of high school: algebra 2 or pre-calculus, physics or advanced biology, AP or honors courses, the first real SAT or ACT, and the start of the college list. Days run 6 hours. Begin building the college application materials in spring.

Math: algebra 2 or pre-calculus

Most students take algebra 2 in 11th if they took geometry in 10th, or pre-calculus if accelerated. The math pinnacle for college-bound students is at least pre-calc by graduation; many add calculus in 12th.

Science: physics or advanced biology

Physics is the typical 11th-grade option, often with an Algebra-based or honors track. Advanced biology, anatomy & physiology, environmental science, or AP biology are common alternatives. Plan to log labs carefully.

AP, dual enrollment, and honors

Many homeschoolers take 1–3 AP exams in 11th (often APUSH, AP English Language, AP Biology, AP Calculus). Dual enrollment at community college is increasingly popular and usually counts on the high school transcript and college transcript simultaneously.

College list and SAT/ACT

Take SAT or ACT in spring of 11th if not already done. Build a college list of 8–12 schools by summer. Visit campuses if possible. Begin essay drafts. PSAT in October is the National Merit qualifier.

Frequently asked questions

How many AP courses should a homeschooler take?

Most college-bound homeschoolers take 2–6 AP exams over high school, with the heaviest year often being 11th. Self-study is common; you can take exams without taking a class.

Is dual enrollment better than AP?

Often yes — dual enrollment courses appear on a real college transcript that most colleges accept for credit. AP credit is less reliably accepted at top schools.

When should we ask for letters of recommendation?

End of 11th or early 12th. For homeschoolers, most colleges accept letters from co-op teachers, dual enrollment professors, employers, mentors, or coaches — not just academic teachers.
